Then I thought, It would be interesting to make a film that’s not only about the nobility of the idea of exploration but also that it was a form of escape from a world he found hostile. You don’t have telephones, you don’t have Internet, you’re dumping rainwater on your head. I remember Charlie and Rob on the raft and I was on the raft with them and in between shots I just saw Charlie having a death stare really, because he hadn’t eaten and I just started rolling camera on him. Now, if you’ve read the book you remember the James Lynch stuff, the investment banker in Brazil who brings his son, who talks about them making him kneel and the circle and all that. It was pretty remote, where we were. But also it’s weird because it’s maybe not what you would think.What fascinated me about the story was a very small passage in the book which was about Fawcett’s father. For 25 years you told audiences the only movie that mattered was Batman so what the f*ck do you expect? Come back next week for a look at the movie’s haunting final shot. Because movies are not best suited for novel adaptations because it’s too much story.So if I immediately get rid of the David Grann stuff and immediately get rid of the James Lynch stuff which, if you’ve read the book, was quite helpful to me for the ending of this movie, I had something that was more like a novella, which was much more manageable. So I met with him and he had a strange, great-looking face, and I thought, This is interesting, I know what to do. I guess I thought it was the right thing to do … The movie, based on New Yorker science writer David Grann’s immaculately told nonfiction book, is a thrilling expansion of that story, anchored by some of the greatest performances of the year (Charlie Hunnam is Fawcett, Robert Pattinson is his trusty sidekick, Sienna Miller is his wife, and Tom Holland is his young son) and some of the finest photography (courtesy of Darius Khondji and actual 35mm film) you’re likely to see … It’s funny, towards the end of the shoot … That’s a great question you ask and it involves your approach to the adaptation process. But if I look at someone like Chris Nolan, who really personalized The Joker, he brought to it a kind of anarchy that is terrifying and it feels personal. That sameness becomes enervating.Did you feel closer to the characters?Well, there was no way you can’t. It’s in the movie. So I used that when thinking about what happened to Fawcett. But to be in that is really tough. Why did I think that was the right thing to do? Did you ever go, “Why am I in this jungle?”Yeah. You don’t watch “Richard III” and start booing because it’s not accurate. I remember he called me and said, “Jimmy Jam, I’m going to stay on as a producer. Was the extreme physical aspect of the shoot a deterrent or was that unrelated?What happened with Brad was he was all set to go on it and we started to talk and thought, well, maybe an Englishman should play this part. No. I’ve declaimed it because it’s upsetting that it’s the only movies being made at the studio. So after about two weeks a kind of sameness to the routine set in.Every day you’d wake up at 4:30 and put on your glasses and they were all steamed because of the humidity. What about that David Grann story really excited you?James Gray: There’s a great thing I once read in this interview with Stanley Kubrick, where somebody asked him what interests you in a story and he said, “Well, it’s sort of like asking why you married your wife. And he didn’t have to lose any weight. I felt that that aspect of it where you utilize David Grann walking around going, “Well, where was Fawcett?” I felt that that approach, which is a kind of post-modern approach and had be done already and done brilliantly well, I didn’t want to try. But even there I had to lose huge chunks of story which I loved — the whole thing how he met and married his wife, it was like something out of a Bronte book, it’s crazy — and I had to reduce the eight trips to three, one for every act of the film.But I didn’t have a problem with that. In 1925, after several previous trips to the area, British explorer Percy Fawcett took his young son into the Amazonian jungle in search of a supposedly advanced indigenous tribe, never to be heard from again. So in order to play with that idea I had to extend the ending as much as I could. And then he went on to make “World War Z,” ironically enough. I watch an old movie every single night, which is great fun, but TV I don’t know. The profit margins were small so they just didn’t make them. I’m going to get this made.” And I kind of went, “Yeah yeah.”I went on to make another movie, and when I was in post-production on that movie, which is called “The Immigrant,” I got a phone call and they said, “We just made this movie called ’12 Years a Slave’ and we really like this actor Benedict Cumberbatch.” I said “no,” because I’m a loser and don’t watch TV and “Sherlock” I didn’t know about. They had massive reshoots because actors were under contract and everything was on a stage so it was a controlled environment and the stakes were lower. Then the second journey he lost some weight. In economic terms, I argue it’s a bad decision, even in a business model. You feel it, which I thought really helped the movie. Then I totally gave up.Then Plan B called again and said, “We’re developing a script with an actor named Charlie Hunnam.” And I said, “Absolutely not. That’s an interesting character. Then the project lost momentum. if I can verbalize it now … But Brad was so great about it. So I thought, That’s interesting. Which is to say we shot Fawcett as an old man with his son first because I wanted it to be this fountain of youth. Am I making any sense?Is there ever any draw for you to do one of these giant studio things?Yes and no. It’s not like in the studio system, where those movies were consistently excellent in a way that movies aren’t now.But it was much easier for them. But I don’t think you can top what Nolan did.”The Lost City of Z” opens everywhere this Friday. And he really understood this lack of respect that I think he felt very deeply and I know that he felt that this movie was his shot at redemption of some kind. “Dark Knight’s” conception of the Joker is amazing. So he had to back out. So I had to cover myself up. I don’t write the genre off at all. I staged all the stuff at the end copying the James Lynch portion of the book and Lynch get saved basically by a seaplane coming down the river but Mr. It’s always been a ludicrous criticism of narrative features like, “It’s not totally historically accurate.” This is not a documentary. For a while, the movie looked like it would never happen, but was suddenly brought back to life with a new cast and James Gray (who also wrote the script) still at the helm. I thought that was interesting because I could understand that. So we put it together and the movie got financed and two weeks before we were scheduled to leave for Amazonia, I got a call from him and he told me his wife was pregnant and would give birth right in the middle of that Amazonia shoot. I will not cast Charlie Hunman. Because the only thing that’s a hit is “The Avengers.” But my attitude is, You created that environment. The difficulty level is insane. I decided it was all about Fawcett. Was that ever a part of the script?Never. But every day for the same two weeks, a certain kind of madness or cabin fever sets in. Perversely, given the physical brutality of it, in some ways it was a very happy shoot because I loved the people in the movie, we all got along great, but that was contrasted with the physical arduousness.The book has these fantastic contemporary bookends with the author journeying into the jungle. So there is a level of transcendence to his story and the mystery has lent him a kind of immortality. We kind of shot the jungle stuff in reverse. I thought he was funny and unbelievably smart and super dedicated and he committed himself to it in a crazy way.Usually what happens in movies is the person that was supposed to be in it winds up being in it. I have huge admiration for so many directors. It was 100 degrees, 100% humidity. The first two weeks I thought, This is all right. I would take my rainwater shower, which was invariably freezing. Now, it’s not the same thing for his wife. If I came in as a hired gun to just do traffic control, that’s no interest. But it maintained a broad based interest in the brand and the product line.If you only make one kind of movie, moviegoing is a habit and the studios used to make one to two prestige movies a year where they may have not made money, but they were there for the prestige aspect. So you can’t help but absorb what the experience.The movie went through two leading men before Charlie Hunnam, Brad Pitt and then Benedict Cumberbatch. First of all, I don’t know if they’d ever let me do one. She has a nice face and a nice figure. I really loved working with him. You use history as a very open way, as a way of expressing how you feel about the world, in this form, and so I figured I could just lose the Grann stuff. I don’t think of the story, despite his disappearing and despite his not finding this city he hoped for, I didn’t think of the story as a tragedy. I would get into my ridiculous outfit. You have to look like a beekeeper. You really have to cover yourself. You can’t go in a T-shirt and shorts. You can’t really film motive, but you can film context. You’d get into a raft and go either up the river or down the river for the shoot or you’d go into the jungle. Then by the end of the first journey was the end of the shoot and Charlie had lost something like 50 pounds, which is crazy. I felt that was a very powerful idea. But if you can find a way to express yourself, it can be fantastic. He has seen a part of the world and come to an understanding about it that no white Europeans back then even understand or understood. I remember Detroit made a very concerted effort in the 1970s with the big four at the time. But no matter how hard it was to put the movie together, it was even harder to shoot, with the crew venturing into the jungle (just like Fawcett) and facing all manner of complications.I got to sit down with Gray in Los Angeles to talk about the movie, just what happened while they were shooting, why the leading men dropped out, and whether or not he’d ever direct a Batman movie.Moviefone: You’ve been working on this a long time. And you had seven studios so you had 14 interesting films made and that was great. But there are a lot of women with a nice face and a nice figure, you can never really put your finger on it.” So there’s a little bit of that. Why did you choose to dramatize it?That’s a great question. The boat captain got malaria and two people in the AD department got dengue, and that is no joke. Charlie Hunnam is wrong.” My wife had been watching “Sons of Anarchy” and I said, “I will not cast an American.” They said, “Well Charlie Hunnam is from Newcastle in England.” I said, “He is?” So I had him over for dinner and he’s the handsomest man in history and my wife falls in love with him. I think I’m right.I want to see a James Gray Batman movie.I’d love to do that. There is, actually. But it’s a problem when it’s the only movies that are being made.At a certain point, it becomes a situation where you start limiting the audience. I kind of think it’s the hardest thing in the world to make a movie. It’s really uncomfortable. In some respects it is a tragedy for her. So I said, “That’s something I can latch onto, that’s something powerful to me.” And everything really sprang from that.It wasn’t so much the adventure aspect although that’s catnip to a movie director in some ways, also terrifying in others.Well, there’s obviously the metaphor of going into the jungle is like making a movie, right?Yeah.This movie seemed like a huge pain in the ass. We’re just in collusion that we’re not going to make convertibles. But it’s different for her because she doesn’t see that part of the world, it’s been shut off to her because of her gender. ever.Much like Fawcett’s tortured journey upriver, the film had a number of production starts and stops, first when the film starred Brad Pitt and again when Benedict Cumberbatch took over the main role. That was a very powerful dual motive. You can see this kind of expression. So you have to find your own way. Fawcett didn’t have that option.You could have just sent them down the river, since nobody really knows what happened. The guy was a well-heeled person and was in the top social circles in England and gambled away two family fortunes and drank himself into the grave. I empathized with Fawcett’s insecurity and the bad position inside the top social circles in England. It’s not that they suck. But it would depend on how much freedom I had to express something that’s interesting to me. You say that to people and they laugh. I can’t very much force the position of “Who cares? I could never top Spike Jonze’s movie “Adaptation” so I didn’t do that again, people would say he’s following in Spike’s footsteps. No American automaker put out convertibles. Which is not to say John Ford isn’t a talent, John Ford is God, but for most directors the machinery made it a little more accessible. Does this mean the Japanese automakers became great because they made convertibles? But the bean counters came in and now they’re panicking. I would get into a van that would take me to the banks of the river. That’s why I felt the ending had to be on her being swallowed up by the same obsession.

Definitely put earmuffs on any innocent souls, because Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza play foul-mouthed uper raunchy nuns who roll their eyes when a priest lists their sins of “filthy conversation, lustfulness, homosexuality.”The humor mostly seems to derive from the juxtaposition of the religious setting with the profane language. When a local farmer bids the sisters a good morning, Plaza shoots back, “Don’t f—ing talk to us!”Dave Franco also stars as a hired hand who’s hiding out from a local lord (Nick Offerman), after sleeping with his wife. Not the bad part, but the good part; Edward admires Oswald as a villain and as a leader. Does he continue to run the city by proxy, and pretend like he has no idea what happened to Oswald, until a new mayor is elected, and then maybe he finds a different job in the government? So Ed kept doing that.That wasn’t something that I had planned out. There’s this interesting … And in a way that probably hasn’t really gone that far in the comics even?Look, I certainly feel privileged for a couple reasons. So I feel really grateful for that.You’re getting more and more shades of green in your wardrobe.Yeah, man. So it was kind of this really easy thing to be like, “Oh my gosh, now Robin, a dear friend of mine, and I get to work together and be like buddies.” So it just kind of was easy and fun.Then as I figure out that I lose the second person that I’ve fallen in love with, it tasted like this second opportunity at normalcy somehow, which wasn’t ever the plan, but it found me again. So that’s what this first episode back is all about.What was fun for you playing, first, the bond and the friendship that Ed and Oswald had, and then how it all turned ugly? Find your identity. He was happily No. It was the first time I got to wear it, I was on set, everyone was, like, freaking out. I just wanted him to like relish in it.As you mentioned, the two people closest to him are out of the picture right now. Figure out someone to kind of replace Oswald as this person who can help you find your identity, figure it out, and then, like, go for it, man! Perhaps the only person equipped to deal with him and guide him that way.So he’s kind of in this crisis at the moment where he has to decide what his next move is. I think it fits into the version of Riddler that I really like, which is someone who is a showman, and is elegant. Tell me about getting him to the point where we left him, and where we’re about to go.Cory Michael Smith: It’s been quite a long ride here. It’s so exciting and invigorating.Lastly, I feel really privileged because the audience, they were receptive from the beginning, and they gave him a chance, and they went along with what started as a pretty slow journey, and I felt a real commitment and support from our audience with what we’ve done. I’ve leaned really hard into, every time something happens to him, and he’s seeking for an answer, or he wants to change, or he’s trying to change, he’s making these declarations about how he’s going to live now, and how he’s not going to live, I’ve made sure that he really committed to each thing he was doing, and tried a new kind of life and existence.One of the most freeing things that happened was when we had two Edwards, and there was a physical manifestation of all of the qualities about himself that he thought were outside of himself. He’s like really aggressive and brusk.So what I’m excited about going into Season 4 is him kind of like figuring out exactly what his presentation is of a riddle — like, really finding his elegance as the Riddler, the showmanship, the grace. It felt like this is just justice, and this is vengeance, this is Oswald’s language, so it seems only fair that I would use his vocabulary on him.Is Ed almost an entirely different person from the Ed you started playing?Absolutely! Does anyone like my green? we’ve already been introduced — it was in Arkham Asylum, so he knows who I am, but I didn’t know who I was at that point. I said, “Have you shown the producers pictures of this material?” They were like, “Yeah [director/producer] Danny Cannon loves it.” “Danny loves this color green in our show?” I lost my sh*t, because I was like, this is really bright. And I’m like, “You all look fabulous. They both have needs and wants, and they’re not necessarily complimentary, but they try to help each other out get what they want, and it’s a very interesting companionship they develop, and it’s certainly been fun working with Erin [Richards].It seems like you’re still going to have to wait for scenes with David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, because that seems like something that’s really more going to happen further down the road. No one notices but him. There’s that path.Or, this thing that he’s kind of preparing himself for, that he kind of yearns for, this challenge, and this exciting option, which is, have a coming out party as a villain. Do you get to do some scenes with some other characters that maybe you haven’t gotten to play with as much?I do. I think it’s most appropriate based on where we started, which was this like clunky, socially inept, gawky, awkward, tense guy that was like scooting around the GCPD to becoming this man who has some prowess, and some power, and is like smooth in his presentation.I think it’s actually quite intimidating to have someone be so slick present you something, and your life is on the line, rather than someone trying to scare you and intimidate you. So the kind of turn and fall into wanting to hurt someone was kind of, I think, easy for him. It’s great. I am ready for the attention, I am ready for this, and you all need to look at me. According to actor Cory Michael Smith, the man inside Ed’s greener and greener suits, the big reveal is now.With “Gotham” returning after a winter hiatus for the remaining seven episodes of its third season, Smith has finally stepped into the center ring as Gotham City’s emerging prince of psychotic puzzles who uses his razor-sharp intellect in the service of increasingly malicious and attention-seeking antics.And, as Smith reveals, after all the lengthy, deliberate setting of the table and plenty of time to chart out Ed’s evolution, it’s been pretty easy being green — as long as it’s in a suit and not a question mark-covered leotard.Moviefone: Here you are, right at the doorway of becoming The Riddler that we’ve all been expecting him to become. I have this scene, because the mayor is obviously missing, I am speaking to the cadets, and it’s their graduation. Tell me about that arc for you and what was the kind of delight as an actor to play.First of all, it’s imitated real life. “The Riddle Factory” is my favorite. I don’t know that you can call it an alliance yet, but I have a relationship with Barbara, and she is the person who kind of lifted the veil on Oswald’s actions and intentions.So there’s a sort of interesting partnership between the two. So I have everything starting really intense and forceful. I like the guy that is a bit of a showman. When that was stolen from me, and I found out that Oswald was the culprit — this was the only person I ever really, outside a relationship, trusted, or admired in such a way that I became their friend, they let me be their friend, and then this is how they kind of repay me. Yeah. But otherwise, I really dig the suits.I think they’re classy. Like I said, I think that’s kind of where I want to work toward.I’ve always liked the iteration of The Riddler as kind of a psychopathic game show host.Yeah. And the thing that happened, in my experience as Ed, was that people actually responded to that. First it was Jim, sort of trying to pretend like he was my friend, and now it’s Oswald.I just think there’s a lot of scar tissue there. It was like an experiment of his. Frankly, the only person that he would trust to kind of guide him into this lifestyle. You’ll get like a splash of color here and there, but I am wearing a very bright, glittery green suit.When I first saw it in the fitting room, I was like “Wait, wait, wait, is that the suit?” They were like, yeah. Where we are at this point: he just killed the mayor, who happened to be his best friend, and also kind of his mentor in villainy. If they want to pay for my personal training months in advance of me putting on a friggin’ leotard, then that’s cool. Does anybody kind of fill the void early on in the rest of the season? I certainly admire Robin [Lord Taylor] , and I’ve enjoyed everything he’s done in this show. But until you learn how to be a graceful, elegant dancer, then the snapping out of it won’t be as impactful. I’m like really excited about Edward finding his way to that, which I think should take some time.If they ever ask you to put on a Frank Gorshin-style leotard, are you up for it?Oh boy! What has it meant to you to really do such a defining version in a mass media format with The Riddler, to go deep with the character in a way that nobody else has really been able to do? So I had to add it, because I just thought it was such a delicious moment where he was like, look at me. It’s my first time I’ve done long form television, and there’s such a joy as an actor, not only to be able to tell a story of a character over a long period of time, but to tell a story of a character that’s as dynamic as this, and that has gone through such a change in three years. I’ve really allowed him to explore identity and try stuff out, and then respond to the fellow actors and adjust accordingly.You took your research and the character’s 60-odd year history very seriously. Of like, “Oh, how do I make people think I have purpose, and I have strength, and I have power?” And it worked, and people were listening to him. Then it was just about gradually changing the colors of green. Tell me what you’re looking forward to in getting to play that dynamic.What I’m really excited about is … One, that I get to contribute to a part of the mythology that really hasn’t been charted extensively at all; two, that we now have three years in the can, and hopefully more to come. The kind of swagger, and confidence, sexuality. When I do scenes with people and they’re all in black leather, I’m going to look like a Christmas ornament.But it’s been quite fun, and it feels right to me, because there’s something about Ed’s coming out that is like, it feels flamboyant, and I like that all of a sudden he’s saying, “Look at me. Look at my bright green suit.” I added a line in 15 on the day when we were filming it. Which I don’t imagine is what he wants. These are things about him that he was intimidated by, and never practiced as sweet little Ed at the GCPD.So when he kind of accepted the fact that this was him, and this was his identity, or that fate has given him of maybe he’s a bad person and he doesn’t deserve a good life, accepting that, and accepting all of these colors that were a bit murkier, really freed him up to be a fuller human being, and constantly surprised himself with his capacity and capabilities.So this season, for example, I made a really strong choice for him, when trying to intimidate people, to really lower his voice, and try to offer a sort of commanding presence by altering the way that he was communicating with people physically. How do I look?”It’s the first time that I wear my suit, and I loved it so much. So to be reintroduced in, like, the classic way of, “This is Bruce Wayne, and this is The Riddler,” is kind of exciting.Also, what I’m doing here at the beginning of Edward kind of calling himself The Riddler, and pursuing this title of villainy, the reality is, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, or what he wants to do with it, or how he’s going to act, or present himself, or behave. I just want him to be able to be really slick, and classy, and then explode from that. Yeah, I think a theme in the journey of Edward is issues with identity. 2 to Oswald. This is someone who never really had friends, and wanted them, and then all of a sudden had his best friend, and is lied to and betrayed, and has a love stolen from him. We’re getting really green!Tell me what’s been fun about plotting that evolutionary direction, and working with your costumers to get Ed to full-on Riddler green.This season has been super fun because we kind of found the shape and template of the suit that we wanted. So over the course of Season 3, I must have had, I don’t know, eight to 10 different colors of green that we were working with, leading up to the green suit that we introduced in [Episode] 15, which is quite a vibrant green, especially for “Gotham,” because most of our characters have a bit more of a darker, dull tone.

It still doesn’t answer who he’s playing, exactly, but at least we can definitively say he’s not Miles Morales. It’s honestly one of the weirdest things you’ve ever seen and a huge departure from the character, who is way more insect-like in the comics. Of course, soon after Klaue shows up a giant action sequence breaks out and T’Challa (aka the Black Panther) leaps into action. He tells Thor that he was banished because, “I tried to start a revolution but didn’t print enough pamphlets.” The two characters walk for a while before Korg admits that the hallway is just a circle. That character is Korg, a giant rock man who featured prominently in the “Planet Hulk” comic book arc that “Thor: Ragnarok” borrows from. Reed, who also directed the sorely underrated first “Ant-Man,” showed off some preliminary artwork from the new film, including both old and new versions of the Ant-Man suit (with the “Captain America: Civil War” being the in-between iteration). We did see a really impressive long shot of him putting on his suit in an alleyway, presumably coming home from school. Michael B. Standing in the corner, tall and grey and dressed like he was waiting outside of a Los Feliz coffee shop, was Taika Waititi, the super-genius director of “Thor: Ragnarok.” “Today we’re going to introduce you to a character that nobody knows is in the movie,” he said. Honestly I didn’t know what to expect. Several people talk about how advanced the nation of Wakanda, first glimpsed at the end of “Captain America: Civil War,” is, with vehicles that look like space ships flying around and advanced armor (including what looked like some kind of robotic rhinoceros — yes please). Korg is tall and craggy but speaks in a lilting New Zealand accent. February 2018 can’t come soon enough.After watching the “Black Panther” sizzle we walked up to the art department.Hanging on the walls was artwork from “Black Panther” (including a teasing glimpse of Jordan’s character), “Thor: Ragnarok,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” On a large, vertically turned monitor was a pre-production sketch of Thanos, the Marvel Cinematic Universe-wide big bad that was teased way back at the end of the first “Avengers” back in 2012. (It has been debated whether or not the more magical elements of the Black Panther character would be present in the film; judging by this the answer is probably.) The footage, while raw, seemed to have that lived-in, slightly off-center, still-elegant long take feel that brilliant filmmaker Ryan Coogler brought to the unexpectedly great “Rocky” spin-off “Creed.”Another, longer sequence featured Klaue (Andy Serkis), last seen getting his arm severed in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” walking into a casino or nightclub. (And seriously, nobody knew a thing.) We got into groups and went on the tour of the offices, which is strikingly cool from the moment you get off the elevator. Visual effects dailies are when they review shots from various effects houses (there were at least a half dozen effects houses credited with the Spider-Man work, including Sony Pictures ImageWorks). I’ve heard the movie described as Marvel’s 007 movie and this sequence certainly reinforced that. Taking him all in he looks big and burly and truly imposing. It was very detailed; there were lit-up Electrical Main Street Parade floats in a backstage area and on the far side of the model fiber-optic fireworks glittered. (The model is President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige’s.) Elsewhere, there was a life-size Baby Groot under a bell jar and a replica of Thor’s hammer. Everett makes a great joke about Klaue dropping a mixtape. (As if anyone thought Waititi was going to follow anything verbatim.)We got to watch a sequence where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is talking to Korg before entering the gladiatorial arena that you see at the end of the teaser trailer. Wells building (named after the beloved Eisner-era executive who died tragically in a helicopter crash), chances are you wouldn’t even know it’s the Marvel floor. 2″ (more on that in a minute).It can’t be stressed just what a transformation this space has undergone. Fighting alongside Korg is his sidekick Miek, who is a larva inside of a robotic exo-skeleton suit. It also reinforced the fact that “Black Panther,” despite its more serious subject matter and cultural sensitivity, will still have all the fun, excitement, and humor of the very best Marvel movies. Looking at the image, it struck me that this was the first time we’ve really seen the character standing up. Most of these shots were just a few seconds long and many took place in sequences already teased in the trailer — Spider-Man foiling bank robbers dressed as the Avengers, him climbing to the top of the Washington Monument. Jordan, who plays the villain, says that the movie will be “honest and gritty.” Later in the tour we walked into the screening room on the first floor of the building and watched dailies from the film. Not anymore.We made our way into a massive room. So there’s that.After our tour we walked across the lot to the main theater and watched a little film called “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. A producer noted that the size of a rat that scampers away will be bigger and there’s still discussion as to how disgusting to make a bag of trash that opens once he web-shoots his bag to the side of the bin. It’s unclear what era it was from, because of the placement of the Astro-Orbiters (remember, it used to be on top of the PeopleMover platform); maybe it was a hodgepodge. If this is the guy every hero has to face, well, be worried for the heroes.In the next art room there was even more art and, oh yeah, “Ant-Man and The Wasp” director Peyton Reed. Reed teased Pym’s new lab (“Where is he working?”), further far-out adventures in the quantum realm (the Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of the comics’ micro-verse), and new technology that allows Ant-Man and the Wasp to shrink not only themselves but also those around them. One of the most striking pieces of artwork was Luis’ van from the first film in the jaws of a dog. It looks terrific; really beautiful and weird like the best parts of the first movie with a larger emphasis on playful psychedelic. “If we add in some sound effects we can make it really gross,” the producer says cheerfully.Other shots that we saw included a shot with Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), a moment where Vulture (Michael Keaton) sits crouched on a building looking like a looming gargoyle (mirroring a piece of artwork we saw earlier), and, maybe most tantalizingly, Donald Glover playing a heretofore-undisclosed character being handed a glove made from a piece of a discarded Ultron robot by one of Vulture’s gang. If you got off at the Marvel floor in the Frank G. Most of the time he’s been in that regal floating throne. There were giant murals on the wall; in the waiting room were several Iron Man suits, lit up and looking impressive. (He didn’t use the word mess.) His goal was to turn this hulking brute into “the most lovable character in the film.” Based on the footage I saw, that seems like a pretty achievable goal.Finally we went into the main theater on the ground level and watched visual effects dailies from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the aforementioned “Black Panther” stuff. I didn’t think we’d actually be meeting any of the filmmakers on our tour; I probably would have tucked my shirttail in if I had known this. But everyone was pretty tight-lipped on that.Our next stop was the visual effects review review room. Afterwards Taika, who also voices the character and provided the motion capture, says that he based the character on “Polynesian nightclub bouncers,” people that had the most genial-sounding voice but you really don’t want to mess with. Klaue is soon greeted by Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), a member of the Joint Counter Terrorism Center (also last seen in “Captain America: Civil War”), and the two have some surprisingly comedic back-and-forth. Reed was as charming and accommodating as always and nimbly avoided answering certain questions.Elsewhere on the wall was artwork of Brie Larson in her “Captain Marvel” costume. It’s very funny. They could have been showing off their new couches and conference rooms for all we knew.
